The AI Challenge: Write a Poem So Good No One Can Tell If Your Child or AI Wrote It
August 12, 2026 Β· ThαΊ§y Sulato

This challenge teaches your child something important: AI can write beautiful words, but it cannot feel anything. Real creativity isn't about "writing pretty words" β it's about "writing something with a soul."
In the summer of 2026, the UK Poetry Society launched a special contest: submit two poems β one written by a human, one written by AI. Readers had to guess which was which.
The result? 48% of readers guessed wrong. That means AI wrote poems just as good as a human's.
But here's the interesting part: once readers found out which poem was AI-written, they said the AI's poem "felt cold," while the human's poem "felt real."
How Can You Tell: Written by a Child vs Written by AI?
β Signs of AI Writing:
1. Too polished β AI uses neatly balanced adjectives and unsurprising imagery.
2. Too symmetrical β AI favors balance, with lines of similar length.
3. Missing "interesting mistakes" β Humans make mistakes, but sometimes those mistakes create wonderful poetic effects. AI never does this.
β Signs of a Child's Writing:
1. It has "surprise" β Your child writes something you didn't expect.
2. It has "gaps" β It doesn't fill in every detail. It leaves room for the reader to imagine.
3. It has a "voice" β There's something that feels distinctly "theirs" β a unique way of expressing themselves.
A Challenge for Your Child: The "Poetry Turing Test"
Step 1: Your Child Writes a Poem
Have your child write an 8-16 line poem about anything they love.
Step 2: You Generate a Poem With AI
Go to ChatGPT and ask: "Write a poem about [topic] in [your child's style]"
Step 3: Mix Them Up
Shuffle your child's poem and the AI's poem together (without telling your child which is which).
Step 4: Let Your Child Guess
Ask them: "Which one did you write? Which one did AI write?"
Step 5: Discuss
Ask your child questions like: "Why do you think this one is AI?" "Which one feels more 'real' to you?" "How do you think you're different from AI?"
A Deeper Lesson: What Is Real Creativity?
Creativity is NOT:
- β Using pretty words
- β Following rules
- β Following a formula
Creativity IS:
- β Sharing a piece of yourself
- β Exposing real feelings
- β Daring to be "strange" or "wrong"
- β Writing things only you could write
AI can never dare to do these things. But your child can.
